So, who can direct me to the best "Fire on the Mountain"? Can't wait to check out your opinions. I absolutely love the song; in fact, the studio version was the first one I heard and is what turned me on the the Dead. Thanks!

IMHO....

9-20-1991 Boston Garden, Set II openers
Help--> Slip--> FIRE

May not be the best Fire, but this was from the first show I listened to after Jerry's passing.

I'm don't to sure on the '78 show, but apparently the '80 show really destroyed quite a bit. A true FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, but not like the one on MT. DIABLO in the 70s. That one burnt for days.

The 1980 version just took out the mountain.

Fire on the Mountain

there is no unanimous greatest version ever

best stand alone versions--11-24-1978, 05-27-1993, 07-13-1985

best versions coming out of Scarlet--05-08-1977, 10-02-1977, 10-10-1980, 10-19-1981, 03-31-1988, 03-22-1990 to name but a few

Good calls all, but I'll heartily second Portland 10/2/77. Also, 9/2/78 Meadowlands belongs in any serious discussion of the greatest "Fires".

For a dark horse from "the Persian Years", check out Hampton 4/13/84- not in the same league as the above and Jerry's voice is toast, but the performance is still pretty grand.

For a great latter day Scarlet > Fire try 7.7.1989 from JFK Stadium. The transition between is pretty good.
